Shipping Costs & Changes

SHIPPING COSTS

Hello, everyone! We don’t like to be a bearer of bad news, but shipping costs have increased yet again. As a result, if you have moved and/or have changed your mailing address, please let us know of your address change – we cannot possibly keep track of all of you via social media!

RETURN TO SENDER

For Issue #3, we have already received some returned packages. When a magazine is returned to us, we are required to pay the return shipping before we can obtain the package from the post office (equal to the initial shipping cost). As it stands, we already offer a lower shipping cost to you than we even pay ourselves. As a result, we cannot afford to pay for shipping a second time around and in order to receive the magazine, you will be responsible for paying the full shipping cost to your new address.

Something else you might not know is that we do not charge artists who are featured in the magazine any fees. Those that are featured receive a complimentary copy of the magazine (inclusive of free shipping).

SHIPPING COSTS
(just to give you a little bit of a rough idea)

ISSUE #1 (2016)

United States: $3.09 USD/copy
Canada: $14.73 USD/copy
International: $21.61 USD/copy

ISSUE #2 (2017)

United States: $3.12 USD/copy
Canada: $14.73 USD/copy
International: $21.61 USD/copy

ISSUE #3 (2017)

United States: $3.61 USD/copy
Canada: $21.97 USD USD/copy
International: $32.78 USD/copy

ADAPTATION

With the most recent increase, we decided to alter our mailing methods and change our international packaging to an envelope which lowered costs a little. We don’t know all that is going on in the world of mail, but we do know that shipping has become quite costly for us!

There are some things that we are considering from a business standpoint to help curtail these costs, one of which is to make the magazine a little smaller (re: it has a high number of pages which ultimately lends to a greater mass; greater mass = greater shipping cost).

Over the past year, we have had meetings with distributors and are exploring that option. There are also grants and business loans in looking towards 2018. For the time being, we might have no other choice but to increase shipping to areas outside of North America as this is where we are seeing the greatest increases in shipping. This truly limits our distribution and international audience though! Eeek!

OPEN TO IDEAS

Our table is always open to ideas/solutions (if you might have any). We are only a two-person operation, and this year I have personally carved into my own funds to cover shipping costs as the cost to ship this issue exceeded our campaign funds and even profits. I truly believe that the best business model is one that is open and honest and willing to take suggestions from others to work towards building greater sustainability.

Inevitably problem solving & ever-evolving,

Issue #3 Has Landed!

Purchase Issue #3 — $35.00 USD SOLD OUT!

Issue #3: Letter from the Founder

Recently, a friend telephoned me to see if I would be interested in going through an old barn. Relentlessly curious and harboring a love for all things timeworn, the answer was, of course, yes. The next morning, I hopped into the car to begin an adventure. I was soon surrounded by the beauty of old growth forests and nestled within all of the green, a faded, red barn came into view. Upon stepping into the entrance, I remember the great sense of overwhelm that I felt. Strangely enough, my sense of overwhelm was not from the seemingly infinite amount of items filling the barn, but was from the fact that I had just stumbled into a time capsule of the past century. I turned around in amazement and began on a journey through history.

Starting with the early 20th century, I climbed through an ancestral tree dating back to the 1910’s with a box of hair locks that still held within them an entire family’s worth of DNA. I danced through 20’s in records of the Jazz Age and quietly tip toed through ‘29 as I read about the stock market crash in the Saturday Evening Post. I waded through the aftermath of it all in the abundance of elegant depression glassware that companies distributed to people for free as an incentive to purchase products. I continued through the hardships stitched in the scrap quilt blocks and all too quickly stepped into a second world war. Opening the Schrafft’s tin of chocolate was somewhat indicative of better times and thus began an economic resurgence. Soon enough though, the cords of atomic era lamps illuminated concerns surrounding a cold war. A feeling of mass hysteria became even more apparent with JFK’s letter in LIFE Magazine (1961) about “How to survive a nuclear fallout.”

I spent an entire day in the barn but it felt as if I had spent years sifting through the past. In the newspapers and items, I found repeating themes of economic collapse, fear, war, destruction, and prosperous times. It was a past that was not our own, but one that gave rise to the modern day that we live in, one that has not deviated from this trajectory. While we cannot begin to understand this history in entirety, tracing back to the root leads us to subjects of greed and ego. Then…and now.

Who wields the biggest weapons? Who has the strongest military? The media is oversaturated with articles about power – that of the US, North Korea, China, and Russia and the potential for a new cold war. Some days I feel like we are living in the dark grooves of a record from times past, the same song that has played over and over and over again throughout history. Are we not playing out a song of perpetual conflict between societies? Or, pledging some mutually assured destruction (MAD)? With the massive evolution of warfare over the past century, are humans only setting out on a path of destruction?

Fear is the fuel for this economy that prevails and I do not know about you, but I am long overdue for a new song to play out, to join in a chorus of criticism and examine the conditions, causes, and consequences of this war-song.

My only question is, “Who is going to flip the record?”

Somewhere Out There

Hey guys, I thought it was time for another update! The shipment of Issue #3 was supposed to arrive on Tuesday (9/5), but as I excitedly tracked it, I noticed that, for some reason, it was stuck in Pennsylvania. After a few phone calls, I learned that part of the shipment was lost. Yes, you read that right, LOST.

screen-shot-2017-09-07-at-3-06-53-pm

According to UPS, the contents were first damaged. Then, the magazines within that shipment group went missing. All of them. Upon discovering this information, I have to say I felt a little bit like Bruce…“Night has fallen, I’m lyin’ awake” (I had a pretty tough time falling asleep that night). To ease stress, Ie tried very hard to think about it all differently. In doing so, I decided I am am just happy to know that E-Squared Magazine is floating around out there somewhere On the Streets of Philadelphia for people to read.

I am working on resolving this issue with the printer and/or UPS (as it should be). In other news, I have a partial shipment that finally made it here…hooray! Who gets their copy first? Well, I have prioritized the list and the first people will be the artists that comprise Issue #3, but you all will receive your copy in short time regardless!

Thank you so much for your patience and understanding! I look forward to sending your copy to you as soon as possible!

Slowly catching up on my ZzzzZZz’s,

science-fiction
seemingly impossible

That’s it! We’re gonna leave it at that! We want you to remain as open-minded about this call as we are! The deadline for submissions is September 24, 2017.

You can read more about our requirements for submission here.

Updates on Issue #3

As many of you already know, our printing campaign has ended. Thanks again for all of the support whether it was through sharing, donating artwork, or contributing financially to the campaign. We really couldn’t do it without your support!

Reception of our funds was a little delayed but once received, we initiated printing. All seemed well, but a week and a half ago we received a copy and some errors were made by our printer in cutting the sheets, compromising the integrity of the issue.Yes, AGAIN (sigh). As a result of these errors that are out of our control, there will be a delay in reception of the new cuts and therefore, your copy of Issue #3.

We have faced some unexpected challenges with our printer in the past and are currently exploring alternate printers for the future – though it took four months to find this one! We truly appreciate your understanding regarding this matter and apologize in advance for this.

Wishing you well on the tail end of summer!

Issue #3: An Interview with Guy Ben-Ary

Cover Photo: Guy Ben-Ary

With each issue of E-Squared Magazine, we feature/interview an individual that we feel best demonstrates the synergy of Art + Science. Issue #3 is set to feature an interview with Guy Ben-Ary and his latest work CellF. Through this unique collaborative project, he creates the worlds first neural synthesizer.

What exactly is CellF? It is an autonomous instrument made from neural networks and analog synthesizers that work in together. Essentially, the musician and musical instrument become one entity to create a rockstar in a Petri dish!

CellF premiered in Perth, Australia in October 2016. This art project presents new questions regarding life, technological advancements, and the materiality of the human body.

You can read more about CellF and see our ten-page interview with Guy Ben-Ary in Issue #3.

Issue #3 ft. Cover Artist Geert Vanhoovels

Cover Photo: Geert Vanhoovels, Global War-ning

With each issue of E-Squared Magazine, we take time to carefully select a cover artist that reflects the perfect mix of Art, Science, & Culture. We sit down with our unique pool of artists making up the current issue and ask questions like:

What’s going on in the world?

What do people need to see and really contemplate?

What’s important to convey to our international audience?

Our goals at E-Squared are to generate questions, creative thought, experimentation, collaboration, and innovation with the hope of sparking real social and cultural change.

With these goals in mind, we have selected Geert Vanhoovels for the cover of Issue #3.

Geert’s work investigates the influence of art on social and political spheres. His work presents an opportunity for us to develop thoughts about the future and engage in a necessary and sometimes sobering dialogue.

We are fortunate to have stumbled upon Geert Vanhoovels and his powerful work. We hope that this selection for Issue #3 stimulates great thought and conversation for you and others just as it has for us.

Looking towards the future,

Emily A. Dustman

Support Art + Science

Cover Photo: Skye Moret

If you have never held a copy of E-Squared Magazine in your hands, it isn’t your typical magazine. In fact, many have stated that it is more like a high quality book, a reference for artists and scientists alike, and a work of art in itself.

More than anything, our audience has stated that E-Squared Magazine has made them think differently. About the human condition. Society and culture. Nature and our connection/impact. Progression. On developing new and innovative ideas in looking towards the future.

In supporting E-Squared Magazine, you are not just helping us with costly printing, you are also supporting art inspired by science and science inspired by art. You are supporting an incubator for new ideas from a diverse network of people around the world.

We have made it so far in such little time and we have so many more great ideas to come! Please consider supporting our cause by:

Celebrating the Imperfect Body with Elizabeth Jameson

In our debut issue, we were honored to feature Elizabeth Jameson. Many years ago, Elizabeth was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Ever since, she has been turning her medical diagnosis into colorful works of art, changing the discourse of what it means to live with a progressive disease.

We just finished watching an incredibly impactful TedxStanford talk by Elizabeth Jameson. From hearing about her neighbor that took her to her first art class, to becoming a painter, to shifting back into a life rooted in service, we were filled with tears and we were filled with joy.

Elizabeth’s work creates a space to tell our stories of illness, encouraging us to “embrace and celebrate our imperfect bodies.” She is inspiring to us all as she documents her own and others’ story of illness.

You can watch her TED Talk here: Learning to Embrace and Celebrate Our Imperfect Bodies

Elizabeth was featured in Issue #1 of E-Squared Magazine and we are so very honored to have her.
